As Head of Internal Communications you will play a critical role in an ambitious and fast-moving organisation. This vital role has one clear aim – to drive engagement amongst our 1,000 staff, mainly UK-based, through effective communications. The Internal Communications team, based in the Support Services division, is at the heart of Save the Children’s operation, working to inform and engage staff on our priorities for children.
Working in more than 120 countries, we do whatever it takes to create breakthroughs in the way the world treats children. Our Support Services department provides leadership and direction in the business of running an efficient organisation and ensuring our resources are used to maximum effect. Together, we save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential.
To be successful you will have outstanding communication skills and a proven track record in leading internal communications in a complex and fast paced organisation. You will have worked closely with senior leaders and be confident in dealing with all levels of staff. You will be an expert in the theory and practice of internal communication, and in order to provide communication leadership for key reactive/ crisis management projects you will be a forward-thinking, proactive and have a solution-focussed approach.
Your responsibilities will include:
  • Leading and project managing targeted pieces of strategic communications
  • Co-leading with the HR Director to embed Save the Children values and shape and deliver Employee Engagement initiatives
  • Energising and engaging staff, through relevant and inspiring communications
  • Driving forward collaboration with the Director of Internal Communications at Save the Children International and Save the Children US
  • Leading and managing a high-performing team
  • Keeping up to date with current practice in internal comms, and bring new ideas and innovation to pilot at Save the Children.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer you will be a self-starter who is motivated to achieve high value outcomes. You will have high energy levels and initiative as well as determination, professionalism and flexibility to work some irregular and unsociable hours. You will also have:
  • Demonstrable experience and success in internal communications, ideally in a complex global organisation
  • Proven project management skills
  • Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written – the ability to convey complex ideas in a straightforward way
  • The ability to influence and gain agreement for ideas and proposals from a variety of stakeholders, including senior management, directors and trustees
  • A high degree of flexibility and adaptability in order to respond to changing needs
  • Experience in delivering internal campaigns and a knowledge of internal communication best practice.
